Heart Care: A Primer on Cholesterol Medication
Cholesterol is both a friend and foe. On one hand, healthy cholesterol helps in cell growth and better nerve function. On the other hand, bad cholesterol can collect in one’s blood vessels and possibly result in a heart attack. For one’s security, it’s always advisable to have cholesterol medication handy in case cholesterol management is necessary.
What cholesterol medication can help?
The most popular of cholesterol medication is called statins. Statins help lower the bad cholesterol called cholesterol LDL in the body. It does so by making sure that this cholesterol is not produced naturally in our liver. Brands of statins include lescol and zocor.
If you want cholesterol medication that is vitamin-based, then try nicotinic acid. Nicotinic acid is a kind of vitamin B-complex that lowers cholesterol LDL. It can also raise the level of cholesterol HDL in your body or the good kind of cholesterol. Sample brands include niaspan.
These two medications, statins and nicotinic acid, may be supplemented with cholesterol absorption inhibitors. These are the drugs that lower the amount of cholesterol a body can absorb. An example is zetia.
Cholesterol medication available in most pharmacies has side effects that are worth considering. For example, taking statins can result to gastro-intestinal upset, cramps and liver problems. Nocotinic acid can increase blood sugar levels and cause peptic ulcers. As a rule, consult a licensed physician before taking in cholesterol medication.
Of course nothing beats natural cholesterol management. Eating healthy, particularly foods that are high in cholesterol HDL and low in cholesterol LDL can help. Regular exercise and sobriety will also facilitate healthy cholesterol levels. If you maintain a fit lifestyle, chances are there’s little need for cholesterol medication.
Alternative cholesterol medication is a vast and varied field and you have plenty of organic options to choose from if commercial drugs are not your thing. For instance, food rich in Omega-3 fatty acids or supplements that provide them, can be your daily maintenance regimen. Omega-3s are believed to help reduce the inflammation of the walls of a person’s arteries thus relieving pressure. They also lower cholesterol LDL in the body.
Psyllium, a plant fiber, is also an effective cholesterol medication. Available in either capsule or powder, psyllium helps flush down cholesterol and other toxins from your body.

Deb-El dry egg whites are an indispensible part of my plan to lose weight. I may also add a few drops of stevia along with 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder. This makes a great liquid lunch and keeps me full of energy, since it is high protein. The egg whites can also be mixed with skim milk and plain yoghurt and frozen fruit such as peaches for a special treat. I am so glad to have found this product… Read More |

Customer Review:
Not wanting to resort to “drugs” to manage Cholesterol, I did some research on plant Stanols, and plant Sterols. They both seem to have the ability to lower the cholesterol in your blood. However, based on a Johns Hopkins health alert….plant sterols tend to lose their ability to lower cholesterol, and instead start to appear in the blood them selves. Where as plant… Read the full review |
