While not everyone may be familiar with what feverfew (tanacetum parthenium) is, this traditional medicine native to Eurasia is one of the most recognized by drug regulatory boards as far as effectiveness and safety is concern. Feverfew, a flowering bush that smells of citrus (a mix of bitter and sweet), is a potent remedy for a variety of conditions. It has been thus far considered as safe for public consumption.

As the name implies, feverfew is the go-to plant for dealing with fever. In fact, the name feverfew comes from the Latin word ‘febrifugia’ which means fever reducer. Feverfew is also known by other names like featherfew, featherfoil, nosebleed and wild quinine. It is a member of the sunflower family.

Feverfew’s use is not limited to fevers. Feverfew has also been found effective for headaches, especially recurring migraines. There are also plenty of people who swear the efficacy of feverfew for arthritis and gastro-intestinal problems. It has also found use in regularizing menstruation.

While the exact mechanism of how feverfew works is still uncertain, it is widely believe that feverfew works by inhibiting the release of chemicals in our bodies that trigger the onset of migraine and fever. This is due to components like parthenolide and tanetin in feverfew. Parthenolide in particular is now being studied for its potential use against cancer.

More recent findings place feverfew as a skin remedy, a way to provide relief for inflamed and irritated skin. It can be both a soothing relief for damaged skin as well as skin healing remedy.

Feverfew leaves can be ingested without cooking or boiling. Traditional medicine recommends chewing one or three feverfew leaves for fever and headaches. Commercially, feverfew is available in capsule or table form; refer to recommended dosage in the label for advice. Note though that feverfew is not recommended for long-term use as feverfew can cause withdrawal symptoms. When taking feverfew, you have to wean yourself gradually off the medicine.

As with any medicine, herbal or otherwise, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking feverfew. This is especially true if this natural remedy is to be taken by young children. Feverfew can have side effects like diarrhea and vomiting when used alongside other herbal medicines.
