For Love of Decaf Tea
Many people are attracted to the healing benefits of tea but don’t want the common side effects of stimulants. Tea, like coffee, contains caffeine which causes alertness. A cup of tea has approximately 80 mgs of caffeine. In high dosages, caffeine can also cause heart palpitations and nervousness. It is understandable then why there are people would prefer decaf tea.
Good thing decaffeinated or decaf tea is readily available. Decaf tea is tea that has had most or all of the caffeine content removed either through ethyl acetate treatment or carbon dioxide treatment. When tea has been decaffeinated, close to 95% of its caffeine content is lost.
Any tea can be decaffeinated; some tea lovers even do so themselves in the comfort of their homes. Drinking decaf tea makes sense especially if the point of the beverage is to feel calm and relaxed.
With decaf tea, enthusiasts can feel free to indulge in evening tea even right before going to bed. There is no worry anymore that the caffeine in tea will keep them awake at night. It also makes tea now a viable beverage for younger children.
Is decaf tea as healthy as non-decaffeinated tea?
It depends on how tea is processed. Most health tea makers are conscious of maintaining health benefits as they decaffeinate, they are careful not to distill tea’s active ingredients called flavonoids along with the caffeine. But understandably, caffeine-related benefits of tea, which includes helping improve blood circulation, is less in decaf tea.
The process of decaffeination itself is safe and poses no health-risk to drinkers. In fact, both treatments are considered as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Authority. These same treatments are used worldwide, even by commercial coffee-makers.
Is the taste different?
The answer to this is not clear-cut. Some tea enthusiasts find that decaf tea taste differently than the non-decaf variety. There are those who like the difference; they find decaf as much lighter and refreshing. Others don’t like the difference; they find decaf tea as ‘less pure’ compared to regular tea. And then there are those who see no difference. It really depends on the individual preference.
